New Agreement Between Serbia And Kosovo

A few weeks later, at a campaign rally in North Carolina, Trump again hailed the deal as “historic,” adding that he was “certain” that the move would give him the Nobel Peace Prize. “We are stopping the mass killings between Kosovo and Serbia,” he said. “They`ve been killing each other for so many years. They`re going to stop killing. The Economic Normalization Agreements of Kosovo and Serbia are a couple of documents in which Kosovo and Serbia have agreed to facilitate economic normalization between them. [1] The documents were signed on 4 September 2020 at the White House, in the presence of US President Donald Trump, by Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti and Serbia President Aleksandar Vuéié. [2] The representative of the United States stated that a briefing by the Special Representative of the European Union could have made this meeting a success. The agreements signed on September 4 at the White House included a number of economic standardization issues. “They will bring growth, investment and jobs to the citizens of both countries and bring a new tone of reconciliation in the pursuit of progress for the Western Balkans,” she said. The complete normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina remains a common goal for the United States and the European Union. The agreements negotiated by the United States complement the discussions supported by the European Union. UNMIK`s role in Kosovo and the region as a peacekeeping mission has long survived its original goal. The Security Council now has a responsibility to divert limited resources from peacekeeping operations to more needy areas and issues. She called on the members of the Council to give serious thought to THE transition of UNMIK and to take the necessary steps to achieve responsible dismantling.

Under the new agreement, the two former Yugoslav states will be the first European countries to have embassies in Jerusalem. The decision has been criticised by the European Union. Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dasai said UNMIK`s presence remained crucial to building a lasting peace on the ground. He cancelled his country`s long-standing and responsible attitude towards dialogue with Pristina and said he had signed the 2013 Brussels agreement after a series of difficult negotiations and major concessions from Belgrade. In the years that followed, Serbia asked the European Union the same question – guarantor of the agreement: can such an agreement be considered valid if a party refuses to respect its obligations under this agreement? To date, Pristina`s statements show that it lacks the political will to start new negotiations in violation of the Brussels agreement. President Trump said Serbia and Kosovo “committed to economic normalization,” calling the agreement “historic” and a “great breakthrough” after years of failed negotiations. In the discussion that followed, the members of the Council generally welcomed the recent agreement on economic normalization and the resumption of EU-backed talks.
