All teachers receive 10 days of illness, four days of bereavement and three personal leave per year. There is no limit to the number of sick days that can be accumulated, and teachers can “deposit” unused sick days if they retire for $45, $65 or $75 per day, depending on how many they have. Teachers may take unpaid periods for public duties, child care or other “special” or “volunteer” reasons deemed appropriate by school management. In 2009, the borough paid between $13,506 and $14,748 per teacher for family health insurance. Teachers have not contributed to these costs unless they choose to purchase the higher price plan. The average private sector cost for a family plan provided by the employer is $13,160. Employees who do not opt for the District plan receive $41 per month, and all employees receive life, long-term disability, visual and dental insurance at no cost to them.
